Sometimes (not every time) I turn my computer on for the last week I get a message that says "A network cable is unplugged." I have unplugged and replugged all cables and made sure that none of them are bad and they are all plugged in tight and there is nothing wrong with them. I discovered (by accident) that when this happens if I only log out of my XP account and then cut the power to the computer without going through the shutdown process, the next time I turn the computer on the problem is gone, but I know this is hard on my system and don't want to keep doing it that way – I would like to find and resolve the problem. I've been told by various people this could be about 4 different things so I'm looking for help/suggestions from someone with computer knowledge.

Network/connectivity help needed?

Also, if I do have to keep getting it to work by improperly shutting down and restarting, what are the consequences to that on my system?

Network Connectivity – Intermittent?

by admin on June 18, 2009

Office setup, 5 hard wired machines, 2 wireless. Outgoing connection is a 15MBps cable modem. Cable modem feeds into 8 port 100MBps router, with VPN/Firewall. It’s a Netgear FVG-318.

All machines connect fine within the local subnet. The wired machines will however lose their internet connection at random. 1 user is dropping their connection and having to use the “repair” option up to 15 times a day. The wireless machines never lose their internet connectivity. The other wired machines may go down anywhere from 1x-10x a day…the repair option in windows always corrects the problem but still…this should not be happening. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

We are running on Windows Server 2003 one several servers. In the past week or so, I've been seeing more and more that connections are being randomly dropped momentarily. Today, it happened to the entire network for about 30 seconds, before it returned to full functionality. I've never seen this before and the only way I can describe it is its like the network has the hiccups, but its getting slightly worse as time passes. Looking for some ideas as to why it is doing this. Thanks!
